Bass – Ed Rose
Conga – Mike O'Connor
Drums – Bubbha Thomas, William Jefferies

Recorded on 26th June 1970.

Here's the title track from this incredibly rare Texas joint on Judnell. The first recording of the Lightmen, before they went on to produce Fancy Pants and Energy Control Center as the "plus one" line-up.
Since people of African decent in America began to openly question the constitution of the United States over their rights as American citizens, a new frontier of thinking among all the people has developed. Among those in the struggle in Houston, Texas, Bubbha Thomas is very active in fighting to achieve not only our civil rights but out human rights as well. I asked him at a Sunday morning rehearsal, "How free are black people in America? ... after giving the question some serious thought, Bubbha replied, "free as they wanna be." With the answer to the question came the name to a tune i had written, the title tune of this album. After the head of tune, there should be no sense of time; each muscian has the freedom to be free musically, as he can imagine himself.

Al Jarreau - 1977 - Look To The Rainbow (Live recorded in Europe)

Al Jarreau - 1977 - Look To The Rainbow (Live recorded in Europe)
Singer Al Jarreau's album, Look to the Rainbow, is easily the most jazz-oriented of all of his Warner Bros. recordings. Cut shortly before Jarreau permanently switched to a more mundane version of R&B, these performances feature him as a brilliant scat singer (able to emulate practically any instrument) and a superior ballad interpreter. Unfortunately, Al Jarreau essentially started on top, artistically speaking, and has since been intent on emphasizing potential commercial appeal over any possible innovations or chance-taking.

Recorded live in Europe between January and February 1977.

Personnel:
Al Jarreau (vocals),
Tom Canning (keyboards),
Lynn Blessing (vibraphone),
Abraham Laboriel (bass),
Joe Correro (drums).

Pete La Roca - 1965 - Basra

Pete La Roca - Basra
Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 5/19/1965

Personnel:
Pete La Roca - drums
Steve Swallow - bass
Steve Kuhn - piano
Joe Henderson - tenor saxophone

"It is strange to realize that drummer Pete La Roca only led two albums during the prime years of his career, for this [LP] reissue of his initial date is a classic. La Roca's three originals ("Basra," which holds one's interest despite staying on one chord throughout, the blues "Candu," and the complex "Tears Come From Heaven") are stimulating but it is the other three songs that really bring out the best playing in the quartet (which is comprised of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Steve Kuhn, and bassist Steve Swallow in addition to La Roca). "Malaguena" is given a great deal of passion, Swallow's "Eiderdown" (heard in its initial recording) receives definitive treatment, and the ballad "Lazy Afternoon" is both haunting and very memorable; Henderson's tone perfectly fits that piece."

Shamek Farrah - 1974 - First Impressions

Shamek Farrah - First Impressions
Produced by Shamek Farrah / Janfar Productions
1974 Strata-East Records

Alto Sax - Shamek Farrah
Bass - Milton Suggs
Trumpet - Norman Person
Piano - Kasa Mu-Barak Allah
Piano - Sonelius Smith
Drums - Clay Herndon
Drums - Ron Warwell
Conga - Calvert "Bo" Satter-White
Percussion - Kenny Harper

As Strata-East Records got rolling, one of the admirable things it was able to do was offer a platform to some more obscure artists who weren’t being heard elsewise, folks like Billy Parker’s Fourth World (including DeeDee, Ronald, and Cecil Bridgewater); the Washington, DC ensemble Juju (who evolved from an Art Ensemble knock-off into the great jazz-funk band Oneness of Juju by the mid-70s); and alto sax player Shamek Farrah. I don’t really know too much about Shamek except that he made two great albums of spiritual jazz for Strata-East in 1974 and ’77 (the second and half of the first in collaboration with pianist Sonelius Smith).
01 "Meterologicly Tuned" (11:20) - Shamek Farrah
02 "Watch What Happens Now" (5:41) - Fredger Dupree
03 "Umoja Suite" (7:23) - Norman Person

George Shearing - Piano
Andy Simpkins - Bass
Rusty Jones - Drums
Sigi Schwab - Guitar
Heribert Thusek - Vibes

The Amigos;
Chino Valdes - Congas & Bongos
Carmelo Garcia - Timbales

Found in Leicester market along with some other great Jazz lp's that included Thad Jones, Charlie Parker and the Dizzy Gillespie landmark bebop LP 'Champ'. The cover looked vaguely familiar and one of the tracks sounded really familiar by name- "The World Is A Ghetto"!!!! Seeing that it had a cover of "Aquarius" on there and being on MPS it was purchased for the sizeable fee of 50 pence. Connoseirs of the breaks should be aware of this Lp for the 2 aformentioned tracks, Aquarius kicks of with what must be one of the heaviest and most begging to be sampled drum intro on any MPS recording whilst "The World Is A Ghetto" should be very familiar to most.

Fania All Stars - Our Latin Thing 2 (2006)

Our Latin Thing 2 is part of Fania’s re-issue campaign, Fania being the record label that is to salsa “what Def Jam is to hip hop,” at least according to Louie Vega. It was founded in 1960s New York by Jerry Masucci and Johnny Pacheco Fania and went on to become the home of Celia Cruz, Tuti Puente and Ray Barretto.
The re-issues consist of never heard before material, re-mastered classics, some limited release DJ mixes by the likes of DJ Format, Bugz in the Attic and Ashley Beedles, and a series of samplers such as this.

Our Latin Thing 2 is an intro to the early work of Fania and 1970s New York - a time when soul, jazz and funk were finding a footing in the Latin scene. Tracks such as Ralph Robles’ ‘Come and Get It’ and Monguito Santamaria’s ‘Ne Ne’ simply ooze cool, though in very different ways; the former with its bouncy piano riffs and sexy horns topped with Robles’ smoky vocals, the latter with its bongo rhythms and fast flowing lyrics.
